For a peaceful day trip just outside of Sydney, Wattamolla Lagoon in the Royal National Park should be top of your list. Benefit from the crystal-clear water and calm conditions – a perfect family day out or quiet coastal escape.

Wattamolla Lagoon is one of New South Wales most captivating natural spots with the lagoon, beach and waterfalls all rolled into one.

The lagoon sits directly behind the beach, creating a sheltered stretch of calm and shallow water that feels like a natural swimming pool. The destination is surrounded by bushland and cliffs with the entire area presenting a secluded atmosphere, even on busy summer days.

When the sun is at its highest, the water appears a stunning shade of turquoise, offering the perfect backdrop for photos, picnics, floating, snorkelling and more.

By taking a short walk from the lagoon you’ll find yourself at Wattamolla Falls – a scenic waterfall that flows into the lagoon below. There’s also a nearby lookout that offers some of the best coastal scenery in the Royal National Park.

If you’re eager to experience more of the location, consider one of the stunning bushwalks – Wattamolla to Eagle Rock and Currarrong Falls, Wattamolla to Little Marley Beach, Wattamolla to Big Marley Beach, and more.

For the best views, we recommend Eagle Rock and Curracurrong Falls, a 8km return hike with a moderate grade. The trail takes you along the famous Royal Coast Track and provides a view of Eagle Rock, a natural sandstone formation that looks just like an eagle’s head. Beside the rock is Curracurrong Falls, one of the only waterfalls in Australia that flows direct;u into the ocean.

For those planning a bigger hike or weekend trip, Wattamolla Lagoon and Falls is located in the middle of the 26km Royal Coast Track that links Bundeena and Otford, offering a convenient refresh point along the way.
