If you want to remove yourself from the crowds and feel like a true sydneysider, toss these eight landmarks on your must-visit list.
Forgotten Songs | Angel Place

An ordinary alleyway transformed into a sombre commemoration of the 50 birds who once inhabited central Sydney, Forgotten Songs is a canopy of birdcages suspended above Angel Place. The songs of the 50 birds, who were once heard in Sydney before they were gradually forced out by European Settlement, filter down the buildings from above and change as day shifts to night. Forgotten Songs draws attention to habitat loss in the city, the biggest threat to bird survival.
Badu Mangroves Boardwalk

If you want to feel a million miles away while remaining near Sydney’s centre, stroll the winding Badu Mangroves Boardwalk in Bicentennial Park to discover the Parramatta River’s largest remaining mangrove forest. Located within the 65-hectare Badu Mangrove, the zigzagging boardwalk acts as a refuge for a number of endangered plant and waterbird species. Disconnect from city-life in this oh-so-quiet oasis filled with Australian white ibis, sea eagles, and ringtail possums to name a few.
Maccallum Pool

Situated on the western side of Cremorne Point, Maccallum Pool is a local Sydney gem that was originally just a rock pool created by local residents. In the 1920s, the pool was developed into the architectural icon it is today, maintaining its heritage theme. Maccallum Pool is a unique harbourside attraction open 24/7 and comes complete with a wooden boardwalk and picket fence. To cool off on a hot day or experience a little lesser-known Sydney history, this pool should be top of your list.
Paddington Reservoir Gardens

Perfect for architecture fanatics and peace-and-quiet seekers alike, the Paddington Reservoir Gardens is the ideal getaway from the busy and fast-moving oxford street. Inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, this sunken garden is a true Sydney secret hidden right under our noses. A state-heritage-listed public park, the Paddington Reservoir Gardens are situated at 255a Oxford Street, Paddington.
Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden

A place of tranquillity and serenity, Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden is an oasis covered in native plants, flowers and sculptures. Situated within the Lavender Bay Parklands, this garden is just a short walk over the Harbour Bridge and was created by artist Wendy Whiteley over the past 20 years. Unfortunately in recent years, the secret garden is no longer a secret due to a large number of Instagram posts and news stories. However, it is still widely regarded by Sydney’s local folk.
The Manly Wormhole

If you’re looking for a breathtaking view, the Manly Wormhole has the goods. Constructed back in 1908 by local fisherman, the Manly Wormhole (also known as the Queenscliff Tunnel) was utilised as a shortcut from Manly to Freshwater Beach. At present, the tunnel is blocked by rockfalls, however these rocks can be climbed across to access the beach. The length of this secret tunnel is approximately 50 metres from the cliff to the other side.
The Sphinx Memorial

Carved by WWI veteran Private William Shirley, “The Sphinx” is located at the entrance to Ku-Ring Chase National Park and forms the centrepiece of a WWI war memorial. Private Shirley carved the piece while a patient at the Convalescent Hospital for returned WWI soldiers in the 1920s. During the war, Private Shirley fought with the AIF before being gassed on the Western Front. For a quick dose of nature and exploration of Australian military history, take the Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head loop walking track.
