If beach-hopping is high on your Australian travel list, this route was made for you.

Day 1: Melbourne to Walhalla

2.5h drive, 180km

Melbourne to Walhalla

While you’re probably itching to get started and visit your first location on this sensational 6-day drive along the south-east coast of Australia, first we have to get you out of Melbourne. Traffic may be heavy if you leave during peak hour so be sure to plan ahead. The further you get from Melbourne’s city centre, the more the countryside will envelop the windows of your car. Look out over the green agricultural lands of West Gippsland, known for dairy farming and a healthy gourmet food scene.

Seeking coffee or morning tea? The highway goes through some of the region’s quaintest towns including Warragul, Yarragon, and Moe. If you’re looking for a pit stop to do some sightseeing, Warragul is a big town full of 19th-century heritage with a great collection of art galleries.

The destination on today’s itinerary is Walhalla. It’s an old mining town that was once one of the richest places in Australia. During the boom of the late 1880s, thousands of people lived and worked in Walhalla – now, there are just 20 permanent residents. If you’re after relaxation, Walhalla has peace and quiet in droves, while still managing to retain the excitement and charm of its golden era.

Day 2: Walhalla to Metung

2.5h drive, 190km

Walhalla to Metung

Today we’re heading down from the mountains and towards the coast, scooting by lush agricultural land. We’re aiming for Gippsland Lakes, also known as Australia’s largest navigable inland water system. Why Gippsland Lakes? While it’s not quite on the coastal edge of Australia, it’s nearby and gives you the opportunity to reduce your driving while also achieving the coastal vibe you’re craving.

On the way to Metung, there are two options we highly recommend for sightseeing or even just a bite to eat. Sale is a former port town with a deep heritage embedded in it. There are also a number of great restaurants including Redd Catt which boast a good spot for a meal or coffee.

Day 3: Metung to Mallacoota

2.5h drive, 210 km

Metung to Mallacoota

On this thought-provoking drive, be surrounded by lush bush from both sides of the road. Weave through national parks and state forests and enjoy the casual vibe of Australia while the sunlight shines through the treetops and creates dancing figures on the floor in front of you.

After 2 hours, you will reach Cann River, a good place to quickly refill drink bottles and hit the bathroom. It’s a small town but that doesn’t mean it isn’t mighty – grab a coffee at the Pelican Point Coffee lounge in your free time.

Mallacoota is the main town in the enormous Croajingolong National Park. The park stretches over 100 metres along the coast and has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve for the natural diversity within it. Spend your time seeing a few different parts of the park and consider hiking to the top of Genoa Peak for fantastic views from above.

Day 4: Mallacoota to Narooma

2.4h drive, 200km

Mallacoota to Narooma

Today you will cross the border, huzzah! But not until the afternoon.Start the day by hitting the first of the coastal towns, Eden, on this 6-day journey after passing along the edge of the Ben Boyd National Park.

The national park is located on the south coast of New South Wales, known for stunning coastal scenery and rich Aboriginal history. A major drawcard of this park is the dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and lush forests it encompasses – perfect for hiking and camping. The town of Eden is in close proximity to the park, offering sensational views for whale watching.

We end day 4 in Narooma, a picturesque coastal town packed full of scenic beaches, sensational walking trails and more. You’ll quickly discover the appeal of Narooma – quiet and laid back with excellent dining options. Don’t forget to visit Montague Island while in the town, home to some of the cutest and most playful seals.

Day 5: Narooma to Jervis Bay

2.5h drive, 180km

Narooma to Jervis Bay

As you slowly creep closer to your final destination, you’ll begin to notice some slightly larger towns along the New South Wales South Coast. But not to worry, it’s all still beautifully laid back with vibes that emit a constant summer holiday feeling.

Take the drive from Narooma to Jervis Bay slowly. There’s lots to see and do on the NSW South Coast so don’t be afraid to stop along the way for a swim, coffee, or wander around a new town.

Jervis Bay is a popular tourist destination with lots to offer. Within Jervis Bay, there are a number of towns and beaches you can peruse. Spend time hiking, whale-watching, kayaking and more. A much-loved attraction of this area is Booderee National Park with its white beaches, high cliffs and crystal clear water for swimming.

Day 6: Jervis Bay to Sydney

3h drive, 200km

Jervis Bay to Sydney

It’s the final stretch, and the longest leg of driving for this entire journey. To avoid a slow and frustrating arrival into the City of Celebrations, keep in mind peak hours to ensure you beat the traffic.

While you may be tempted to push through and reach this sensational destination – there are a number of special things to see along the way. The charming South Coast towns are perfect for resting and a mild amount of exploration.

Take Berry for example, an inland town full of heritage buildings, quaint stores and cafes. Walk the gorgeous main street lined with undeniably interesting buildings and plenty of boutique shops. Further up the coast is Kiama – arguably one of the most beautiful towns in the region. Witness the famous blowhole where waves crash through and spray up into the air.

Conclusion

Once you reach Sydney, you’re onto your next adventure. This itinerary is based on a 1 night stay in each location, however I would suggest extending for a night or two to get the most out of your domestic or international trip – perhaps in Metung, Mallacoota or Jervis Bay.
